The Story of a Nonconformist

I am a Freedom Fighter. 
My message is Freedom. Freedom from everything, freedom for everyone, and freedom to be.

I was never on the “inside” and when occasionally invited in I was uncomfortable having to put on a coat and gloves for the chill. I was forced to be outside. But I never stood looking in the window motioning for someone to open the door and let me in. I ventured to explore the world outside. Being gay and growing up in a small town at a time when it was still unacceptable has given me an incredibly mysterious gift and curse. I can’t say I’d ever change my sexual orientation if given the chance for I would be a completely different person all together. An easy ride would not take me down the road I am on.

In elementary school, they said I ran like a girl. Walking up to bat, throw, or kick in gym, classmates would yell “easy out”. I didn't have the skills for ball games. I could run and I was fast. I always placed 2nd or 3rd in annual sprints throughout public schooling. Amazingly enough, I was good at more competitive sports like hockey - much to everyone's surprise. Perhaps I was more motivated to race my classmates for the puck. They were always a little taken back by my sudden aggression played out during. 

Although I was known to be gay or different, I was still rumored to be involved in sexual trysts with skanky girls. To my uneducated peers I was just a pervert. This strange aura I wore attracted the curiosity of a rebellious troubled sort in middle school. He was my first hard crush. He taunted and teased me in a way that was oddly sexual, oddly bully-ish. By high school we had wandered in different circles. Any association with me had become too uneasy for most by this point. In retrospect, I think he had an adolescent flirtation with bisexuality, but this is my story not his. 


So I introduced myself as a high school freshman by bleaching my hair strawberry blond (it was kind of orange). A fairly rebellious act as this was before the boy bands of the late 90s made it a trend. I was nicknamed “Goldie” and enjoyed my controversial celebrity status. I believe this is when the narcissism kicked in. I enjoyed making up things about myself just to see what absurdities my peers were willing to believe. None of these stories were flattering, quite the opposite. I made myself the celebrity, school the tabloid, and my classmates the losers reading it. When I couldn’t get into Journalism class, I found a direct route to writing for the school paper. I wrote to the editor of the state newspaper who published the county school paper. I was able to get my pieces published in the school paper (more often than the journalism class) and the state paper. I used this perfect outlet to tell the school exactly what I thought and how I felt about them, while of course doting on myself (Read those article clippings here). Everybody was pissed and miffed by my blatant “in your face” diss. One coach/part-time teacher read the article to his class and all but insisted I stand in front of a firing squad. Prior to this, I had exercised my teenage angst by setting school trash cans on fire (sad attempt at burning down the school), a fist fight, and setting off firecrackers in the stairwell to mimic bombs (it actually sounded like an air raid). Needless to say, I stood like a pleased fan of The Anarchist’s Cookbook watching the terror of my schoolmates running around aimlessly. Now the idea of terrorism seems to be in opposition to the fight for freedom. But doesn’t every waged war hope for freedom? I have since evolved from that boy who acted out of fear and hurt.


Growing up, I was really skinny and insecure about it until I arrived at the gay bar. So when I put on some weight I felt a little more comfortable. My personality had to shine through because I couldn't rely on my boyish charm and innocent looks anymore. So my sense of humor came through and won people over. I felt more masculine. And the real me (I was insecure about sharing) was accepted. People often mistake me for being vain. When the truth is I am working out my own issues and insecurities through sharing. I do not share pictures of myself because I think I’m hot or sexy and seek validation. I seek acceptance of self by not hiding. I have what has been an ethnically confusing face and a body that has fluctuated from scarecrow to twink to cherub to man-boy. So, I have a love/hate relationship with my weight. But I think the "hate" is from external forces.

As a new adult, I came out to the world outside my hometown. I had that deceptive idyllic notion of the gay bar as being this happy wonderland where I would be welcomed with open arms. As if I had finally, found my tribe. Truth is, I don’t have a tribe. There isn’t a group of people like me. I wasted too much of my early adulthood searching for such a tribe. When the gays tried to label me “twink” or exercise their preconceived notions based on my youth and appearance, I rejected them. I went to the club to dance and participate in the theatre of it, not to hook up. I still did things to stand out.  I wore "art" shirts and did odd things to my hair that entertained me. I danced on stage by myself. I danced to music no one else would get up for.

I was in a waffle shop around 3am after a night out of wearing some fairly flaming attire for Halloween. There my partner and I were accosted by some local rednecks with rude anti-gay slurs. I denounced them all as trash. There was no way I would concede on a stare-down with a 300 pound man who didn’t like being told he was trash. My passion was greater. I was confident I was not their ideas, he was not so confident he was not mine. He eventually took his seat. 

Living in the south (northern Florida), for a couple of years I experienced a twist on the traditional white vs. black type of racism. The white people were so afraid of being accused of racism; they allowed the black people to be the exception to any rule. The black people at my place of work were not held to the same standard and it wasn’t exactly a hidden truth. I am all about equality. Equality has no exceptions. I of course did not stand for this inequality. It wasn’t long before my use of the word “ghetto” in reference to a black co-worker’s attitude was turned into a racist rant. Explaining the origin of the word and its usage saved me from ultimate demise. Afterward, my supervisor sent me the Ebonics Dictionary --- to reference diverse communication? I still can’t justify that act. However, later when a co-worker voiced her disgust in a meeting over Disneyworld’s “gay days” stating “That’s a family place!” management merely shrugged. I also became a member and lead coordinator of the Diversity Committee which appalled some. But what better way to educate the alleged ignorant?

I’ve been fired for being gay (Read that story here) and I’ve combated the evils of jealous gay managers and closeted gay co-workers at Ricoh.  There, was the kind of homophobia that manifests from jealousy and by bitter gays who are unable to mesh or integrate into “straight society” in the same fashion as I am able to do, for instance. I was unapologetic about being myself, loud and proud---and that always rubs certain people the wrong way. It was someone’s fear of being outted or likened to homosexuality that ignited the spark that burned homophobic fires again. Ricoh is a place where otherwise hopeless bottom feeders get hired to do menial tasks with constant harassment from their under qualified and inexperienced management team. Thus, creating a cesspool of misery. In the end, I realized the torment and suffering of some individuals who caused me harm. For they have not the freedom I do. They are slaves to societal norms. I retracted plans for revenge and left them with their envy. 

I have studied Christianity and Buddhism, taken up Yoga, and vowed to be a better citizen of the planet all at my own pace and never to be trendy or righteous. I have always been an optimist. I guess you could say, I rarely let people see my private pain. I rarely share my troubles or worries. And instead put out all that is good with me – happy go lucky I am often known to be. I do not share my spirituality to preach or act as a guru, but rather to help myself stay on the path. I do not share my writing to insinuate mine is the work of brilliance, but rather I share my story through it and even in fiction lies elements of truth.

I always felt society expected people like me to apologize for having ambition and determination. There are going to be times when you are not liked and are treated like you have a curse. Telling the truth, standing up for what’s right can be a lonely way of life.  

Much controversy has been made in my presence and of course it has never been my style to avoid that. I am not afraid of controversy or being unpopular. People have been afraid of losing their jobs by mere association with me. As a writer, I must write about my experiences. The only way to be free is to put the truth out there.
I must tell my truth.
I must let them know of my humanity.
I cannot stand silent.
I cannot cower.
How would civilization ever move forward if we all just kept quiet and stood in line?

I do not like or follow those who are merely famous, talented, popular, beautiful, acceptable, or the like. My heroes have always been the rebels, the outsiders, the controversial, the game changers --- And like them, I will always dance to the techno beat of a different synth; until the hour my heart gives out from exhaustion. 

I am in debt to no one but myself; for all the time I doubted and discredited myself. 

As I get older and approach my mid-thirties, I live more for simplicity. I allow what is natural, to be. We spend our adolescence imagining what we want to be and our twenties trying to be that. The time of creating oneself passes for the time to be oneself. I am freer from what people think and comparing myself to others or the ideals of what and how I should be. I can’t really say I’m the best at anything --- but I do know that no one does it like I do. 

I am no longer searching, no longer yearning. I know what I have to do. My place, my path --- it's so easy; to be good to others (and forgive my foes), to be grateful (for what I’ve been through), and to be generous (to those on the other end of it). That’s true freedom!

Collapse of Our So-Called Culture

Americans are going to pot; two-fold. 
Every generation says it, “This generation knows nothing, appreciates nothing, and is bringing our culture down.”


So regarding pot, marijuana that is, I pose the following question for our times; is the legalization in some states of a once private and taboo, yet easily accessible drug that represented rebellion and anarchy for generations downplaying the whole idea? It’s kind of like watching gay sex on network television.

And how about this incessant hookup culture? It’s all everything is about these days. I had a friend; okay I thought we were friends. It was kind of a bromance. Anyway, after he left the company we worked for he rarely communicated. In fact, true to self, I was always inviting him to do things and he rarely obliged. However, after he left he did frequently text a female co-worker of ours wanting to get tit pics and meet up before he got hitched. The quickie, the hook-up, what have you has become more important than saying “Hello, how are you. How have you been?”

Later, I left the company (Corporate Cowards). People who I thought were my friends simply deleted and blocked me on Facebook.  Instead of grown adults having a conversation about what offenses may have been given or giving any reason at all, there was no explanation, just a cowardice evasive faceless impersonal write-off. This instant gratification technology allows us to behave rudely, selfishly, and virtually blame the gadget for its ability to do so. It’s the norm, the culture, giving us a guilt free, no afterthought kind of existence.

In this "age of information" and technology, we are unknowingly craving something more than the digital experience. Something real, tangible, and genuine --- what is natural.

We judge too often one’s health by their appearance. What a colossal deception. Sure thinner people are more likely to not have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. However, cancers, STIs, and viruses can certainly be hiding in the most desirable of bodies.  I liken to the fat image of Buddha who is undoubtedly bountiful in nourishment of the soul, spirit, and flesh. The happy Buddha with hands in air is always chubby.

I could go on and on and write an hourly article or a whole other blog on this subject. But your attention has probably been pulled away 3 or 4 times already. 

A Writer Writes

A writer writes regardless of audience; no matter who is reading if anyone at all

Mid-Thirties Life Catharsis

I am old-fashioned. 
It is a colossal seismic shift in thinking from just 50 years ago that thin is equated with health. Who hasn't gained weight since they were twenty-something? Why do we chase youth like the end of a rainbow? A person can be shapely and well-nourished; body fat does not always indicate health issues. Americans seem so preoccupied with the notion of "losing some weight". Do this, do that and you might even lose a few pounds. Maybe I'm trying to get bigger, yes bigger to expand my presence in the physical sense to even out the balance with my big personality! 
Why do I need to tan? I’m an Irish-American living in the mid-west.

I’m wearing my glasses more often instead of contact lenses. I rarely put product in my hair anymore. My favorite place to buy clothes is JCPenny.

The acceptance of the current/next generation's lack is daunting. I have the sensibility and intellectualism of a generation 20 yrs older. 
I am not the 30 is the new 20. I am the old 30 is the current 50.

Hope for the Future of America

Do you have healthcare coverage? Do you have a job? Do you pay out of your own pocket for your college? Or do you not? When are you ever told no? What can you control and what can you not?

Do you save on healthcare coverage because you are on your spouse’s plan instead of your own? Can you comfortably put up pictures of your family at work and share what your family did over the weekend without hesitation? Does your income/family/background determine whether you can get a higher education? Do you feel like you are a part of America? Do you feel that you are an American and when wars are fought, lives are lost --- they are for you and your freedom? Or do you not?

Higher taxes, unemployment, and affordable healthcare --- to some, a luxury to worry about. What if you had to worry that your country will have a leader who does not approve of you or your life? You worry because you know such a mentality is extremely influential. You apply for a job, but your mannerisms make the potential boss uncomfortable. You have health insurance, but you’re not permitted in the room because you’re not considered a relative.

If you were a minority, and if your personal safety was a greater concern than HMOs and PPOs, if every election year you stressed about the possibility of your civil rights being decreased, if you were told NO --- You would understand that EQUALITY and FREEDOM are taken for granted by those who have it and you wouldn’t worry so much about MONEY.

You’re a fairly intelligent person and you know that the gay can’t be prayed away. Now imagine your 13 year old child struggles, but ultimately tells you that they are gay. Think about this. Now ask yourself, what is most important in our future?

Minimal Meat Eater


Once upon a time I became an ovo-lacto vegetarian. I felt enlightened, evolved. I was in college and there were many things I was becoming educated and passionate about; politics, philanthropy, and animal rights. A couple of years later I gave into temptation, cravings, and other influences from my Appalachian culture. I only sometimes indulge in eating meat-like products. There are still many types and forms of meat that I do not eat. When I eat meat, I do prefer fake meat or fast food such as chicken nuggets and McD's (soybean) burgers. I think it's much like an affordable leather sofa; it can only be 10% genuine for the price. And yes I am trying to rationalize eating meat. I blame my upbringing, influences, and lack of affordable and convenient vegetarian options comparably. I do think eating meat is morally wrong and nutritional unnecessary. So I wrestle with my lack of conviction and will-power. When I became an enlightened vegetarian, I was very vocal about it. Now that I have decided to call myself a "Minimal Meat Eater", I am a little more reserved when discussing my diet. One day, I'll pack a cheese sandwich in my "No Animals In Here" bag from PETA and my co-workers will ask, "Are you a vegetarian?" A few days of good conscious eating later, I give in to having a hot dog served in the cafeteria and almost want to hide. My diet confuses my co-workers and I try to explain by coming up with this term. But why? Whose business is it anyway? I don't really have a "diet", I eat what I want, when I want, and I don't eat what I don't. I have no self-discipline; I am an American born and raised, forgive me. Before the golden arches, I kneel and confess my shame. 

Christians Are The Terrorists

Is it fair that Christians are identifying Muslims as terrorists? Christians have a long history of scare tactics and deplorable acts that most definitely fall under terrorism.Described here are some of the most notable Christian terrorist organizations and acts of Christian terrorism throughout history.

Pro-Lifers, Kill For the Cause

Anti-abortion violence has included destruction of property, vandalism, arson, bombings, kidnapping, stalking, assault, attempted murder, and murder. Christian views on abortion have been cited by Christian individuals and groups that are responsible for threats, assault, murder, and bombings against abortion clinics and doctors mostly in the United States, but has also occurred in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

The American Coalition of Life Activists feature wanted-style posters of physicians that perform abortions along with a monetary reward for any information that would lead to their "arrest, conviction and revocation of license to practice medicine". The ACLA described these physicians as “war criminals” and accused them of committing “crimes against humanity”. The Nuremberg Files was a controversial web site which published the names, home addresses, telephone numbers, and other personal information of abortion providers – highlighting the names of those who had been wounded and striking out those of which had been killed. The site was accused of being a thinly veiled hit list intended to incite violence.

The Army of God alone was responsible for bombing and setting fire to over one hundred clinics before the year 1994. They also invaded more than three hundred clinics and vandalized more than four hundred. While this group has committed numerous property crimes, they are notorious for their more personal acts of violence such as kidnapping, attempted murder, and murder. The Army of God Manual serves as a guide to arson, chemical attacks, invasions, and bombings.

The Crusades

The Crusades were a series of religiously-sanctioned military campaigns waged by much of Latin Christian Europe, particularly the Franks of France and the Holy Roman Empire. The specific crusades to restore Christian control of the Holy Land were fought over a period of nearly 200 years, between 1095 and 1291. Other campaigns in Spain and Eastern Europe continued into the 15th century. The Crusades were fought mainly against Muslims, although campaigns were also waged against pagan Slavs, Jews, Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians, Mongols, Cathars, Hussites, Waldensians, Old Prussians, and political enemies of the popes.

Witch Trials

In Europe during the Middle Ages, witch trials were the direct result of Christian Church doctrine. Christian leaders including the Pope justified murder of the accused witches by associating witchcraft with wild Satanic ritual parties in which there was much naked dancing, orgy sex, and cannibalistic infanticide – whether true or not. More than likely an accusation for more of the church's propaganda. Scholars estimate that those executed for witchcraft vary between about 40,000 and 100,000. The number of witch trials in Europe that are known for certain to have ended in executions is around 12,000.One theory proposes that "witches" often possessed good midwifery skills, and were prosecuted in order to extinguish knowledge about birth control in an effort to repopulate Europe after the Black Death.

The Salem Witch trials serve as a cautionary tale about the dangers of religious extremism, false accusations, lapses in due process, and governmental intrusion on individual liberties.

Salem Village formed their own separate covenanted church congregation and ordained their own minister. The Puritans believed in the existence of an invisible world inhabited by God and the angels including the Devil (who was seen as a fallen angel) and his fellow demons. To Puritans, this invisible world was as real as the visible one around them. The patriarchal beliefs that Puritans held in the community added further stresses. Women, they believed, should be completely subservient to men. By nature, a woman was more likely to enlist in the Devil's service than was a man, and women were considered lustful by nature. In addition, the small-town atmosphere made secrets difficult to keep and people's opinions about their neighbors were generally accepted as fact. In an age where the philosophy "children should be seen and not heard" was taken at face value, children were at the bottom of the social ladder. Toys and games were seen as idle and playing was discouraged.

Using traditional English white magic to discover the identity of a witch, a "witch cake" was made. The cake, made from rye meal and urine from the afflicted, was fed to a dog. According to English folk understanding of how witches accomplished affliction, when the dog ate the cake, the witch herself would be hurt because invisible particles she had sent to the afflicted remained in their urine, and her cries of pain when the dog ate the cake would identify her as the witch. This superstition was based on the Cartesian "Doctrine of Effluvia", which stated that witches afflicted by the use of "venomous and malignant particles, that were ejected from the eye".

Much, but not all, of the evidence used against the accused was spectral evidence, or the testimony of the afflicted who claimed to see the apparition or the shape of the person who was allegedly afflicting them. The theological dispute that ensued about the use of this evidence centered on whether a person had to give permission to the Devil for his/her shape to be used to afflict. Opponents claimed that the Devil was able to use anyone's shape to afflict people, but the Court contended that the Devil could not use a person's shape without that person's permission; therefore, when the afflicted claimed to see the apparition of a specific person, that was accepted as evidence that the accused had been complicit with the Devil.

The existence of so-called witch's teats on the body of the accused was considered evidence. A witch's teat was said to be a mole or blemish somewhere on the body that was insensitive to touch; discovery of such insensitive areas was considered de facto evidence of witchcraft, though in practice, the witch's teat was usually insensitive by design, with examiners using secretly-dulled needles to claim that the accused could not feel the prick of a pin.

Remember the fabulous fifties? Moreover, how our grandparents talk about simpler times. The Mayberryesque life, and do you remember those modern day witch-hunts? It was during this infamous McCarthy era that the McCarthy hearings took place. Mass paranoia and persecution resulted in many careers and lives ruined by accusations of communism. Anti-Communist committees, panels and "loyalty review boards" across the US, became the most famous 'witch-hunt' of the 20th century. Later deemed unconstitutional, they represented a major breakdown in civil liberties and civil discourse; those accused of being Communist sympathizers could find themselves 'blacklisted'. Ronald Reagan and Tricky Dick Nixon were among these finger pointers.

Witch-hunts against children have occurred as recently as 1999 in the Congo and in Tanzania, where women have been accused of being witches for having red eyes. Relatives seeking the property of the accused victim often lead witch-hunts in Africa.

Hysteria and a "moral panic" surrounding Satanic ritual abuse, prominent in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, in the 1980s and 90s, used much of the same occult and conspiratorial propaganda. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_satanic_ritual_abuse_allegations

The McMartin preschool trial of 1984 to 1990 is the longest trial currently recognized in American history. The victims were accused of satanic ritual abuse in underground tunnels, involving flying witches, blood drinking, mutilated corpses, and human sacrifice. More than 350 people were involved in the fabrication of the allegations, which were taken seriously by the media, the public, the courts, and the prosecution. The jury did not believe the allegations, and the victims were freed.

KKK

The notorious hate group has a record of using terrorism, violence, and lynching to murder and oppress African Americans, Jews and other minorities and to intimidate and oppose Roman Catholics and labor unions. Klan members donned masks and robes that hid their identities and added to the drama of their night rides, their chosen time for attacks. Many of them operated in small towns and rural areas where people otherwise knew each other's faces, and sometimes still recognized the attackers. "The kind of thing that men are afraid or ashamed to do openly, and by day, they accomplish secretly, masked, and at night" sometimes claiming to be ghosts of Confederate soldiers to frighten superstitious blacks. Klan violence worked to suppress black voting. Members of KKK-affiliated groups murdered civil rights workers and children in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham.

At its peak in the mid-1920s, the organization included about 15% of the nation's eligible population, approximately 4–5 million men. Klan groups lynched and murdered Black soldiers returning from World War I while they were still in military uniforms. The Klan warned Blacks that they must respect the rights of the white race "in whose country they are permitted to reside". The number of lynchings escalated, and from 1918 to 1927, 416 African Americans were killed, mostly in the South. When two black men attempted to vote in November 1920 in Ocoee, Florida, the Klan attacked the black community. In the ensuing violence, six black residents and two whites were killed.


The Klan's popularity fell further during the Great Depression and World War II. Imagine that. How hypocritical of our country to take part in the prosecution of German war criminals for their heinous acts against Jews, Gays, Blacks, and other social and ethnic minorities. Did our political leaders reflect to hold our own accountable for the same? Many holocausts have occurred in our own country in the name of Christianity.

The Klan still poses threat today. The present-day Ku Klux Klan is not one organization. Rather it is made up of small independent chapters across the United States. The formation of independent chapters has made the KKK groups more difficult to infiltrate and researchers find it hard to estimate its numbers. KKK members have stepped up recruitment in recent years but the organization continues to grow slowly, with membership estimated at 5,000–8,000 across 179 chapters. These latest drives have seized upon issues such as people's anxieties about illegal immigration, urban crime and same-sex marriage. Membership in the Klan is secret. Like many fraternal organizations, the Klan has signs that members can use to recognize one another. A member may use the acronym AYAK (Are you a Klansman?) in conversation to surreptitiously identify himself to another potential member. The response AKIA (A Klansman I am) completes the question.

Hitler and the Nazis

Adolf Hitler was a Christian preacher. He preached to anyone that would listen that his ideals were of the Christian faith. He believed he was doing "the Lord's work". Hitler described his supposedly divine mandate for his anti-Semitism: "Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."

The German Christians, constituted the strongest Protestant movement in Germany after the 1932 Church elections, with the aim of synthesizing Christianity with the ideology of National Socialism. There were various groups within, some more radical than others, but united in the goal of establishing a national socialist Protestantism. They abolished what they considered to be Jewish traditions in Christianity, and some but not all rejected the Old Testament altogether. They rejected academic theology as sterile and not populist enough and were often anti-Catholic. On November 1933, A Protestant mass rally of the German Christians, which brought together a record 20,000 people, passed three resolutions:
• Adolf Hitler is the completion of the reformation.

• Baptized Jews are to be dismissed from the Church.

• The Old Testament is to be excluded from Sacred Scriptures.

Hitler once stated, "I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so."
Some Nazis promoted Positive Christianity, which attempted to replace traditional Christian beliefs with those agreeable with Nazism, which many German Christians accepted. Even in the later years of the Third Reich, many Protestant and Catholic clergy within Germany persisted in believing that Nazism was in its essence in accordance with Christian precepts. Typically, those who persisted were considered a threat to Nazi ideology and marginalized or censored.


A Brief Breakdown of Christian Terrorism by Area:
Canada: The "Sons of Freedom" blew up power pylons, railroad bridges, and set fire to homes.

India: The National Liberation Front of Tripura has been classified by the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism as one of the ten most active terrorist groups in the world for forcefully converting people to Christianity.

Northern Ireland: There are connections between the Catholic Church and the Provisional Irish Republican Army, a terrorist group in the United Kingdom and an illegal organization in the Republic of Ireland.

Russia: The Russian Orthodox Church has been accused of murders, and several terrorist attacks including the bombing of the US Consulate in Yekaterinburg.

Uganda: The Lord's Resistance Army, engaged in an armed rebellion against the Ugandan government, has used child soldiers and committed numerous crimes against humanity; including massacres, abductions, mutilation, torture, rape, porters and sex slaves It's led by Joseph Kony, who proclaims himself the spokesperson of God and a spirit medium, primarily of the Christian Holy Spirit. LRA fighters wear rosary beads and recite passages from the Bible before battle.

Vatican City: The St. Bartholomew's Day massacre gave Pope Gregory XIII, more pleasure than fifty Battles of Lepanto, and he commissioned Vasari to paint frescoes of it in the Vatican. It is estimated that ten thousand to possibly one-hundred thousand French Protestants were killed by Catholic mobs. The massacre led to the start of the fourth war of the French Wars of Religion. Peter Steinfels has cited the historical case of the Gunpowder Plot, when Guy Fawkes and other Catholic revolutionaries attempted to overthrow the Protestant aristocracy of England by blowing up the Houses of Parliament, as a notable case of Christian terrorism.

United States: The white supremacist group, Ku Klux Klan engaged in arson, beatings, cross burning, destruction of property, lynching, murder, rape, tar-and-feathering, and whipping against African Americans, Jews, Catholics and other social and ethnic minorities. Members of extremist groups such as the Army of God began executing attacks against abortion clinics and doctors across the US. A number of terrorist attacks, including the Centennial Olympic Park bombing during the 1996 Summer Olympics, were accused of being carried out by individuals and groups with ties to the Christian Identity and Christian Patriot movements; including the Lambs of Christ. Christian Identity is a loosely affiliated global group of churches and individuals devoted to a racialized theology that asserts North European whites are the direct descendants of the lost tribes of Israel, God's chosen people. It has been associated with groups such as the Aryan Nations, Aryan Republican Army, Eric Robert Rudolph, Phineas Priesthood, and The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord. It has been cited as an influence in a number of terrorist attacks around the world, including the bombings. A group called Concerned Christians were deported from Israel on suspicion of planning to attack holy sites in Jerusalem at the end of 1999, believing that their deaths would "lead them to heaven."

Today
Christians continue acts of terror with such scare tactics as false accusations that if same-sex marriage is legal than children will be graphically taught how homosexuals have sex and other absurdities. They inflamed red state fears that Barack Obama was a Muslim and therefore conspiring with terrorist organizations. There must be a separation of church and state. There must also be a separation of religion and law. There is a separation of religion and logic -- just as superstition is separate from rationale.

Humanities 101, Michael Jackson, and Not Conforming

The human experience is exemplified through art and conveyed through the culture. It is said that music is the universal language, that poetry follows no language rules except those set forth by the author, a picture is worth a thousand words, and that the movies aren’t telling everyone’s story. It seems art is an ideal or exaggerated version of the human experience, religion is that which we seek but are often unable to manifest, and culture is the actual representation.

I was to discuss a random act of kindness I had done. I was without an experience to share. I guess I’m not nearly as nice or thoughtful of a person as I liked to think I was. I have decided to act more by putting charitable notions into motion. One day I think I’ll get together with a friend and go around town committing acts of kindness. We’ll be like serial kindness killers.

In the aftermath of his death, I believe there is a great lesson to be learned from the life of Michael Jackson. Jackson was very strange to most of us. We did not understand him. Most people it seems didn’t take the time to try to understand him. We really don’t know what his shoes feel like, where they’ve walked, or what they may have ran from. Nothing can excuse the violation of another human being if in fact he is guilty of such. However, it seems Jackson was tried in the court of societal standards and was found guilty. I have always subscribed to the theory that Jackson suffers from a childhood repression. He seems obsessed with creating a childhood he didn’t have. I think he likes children as his peers. I would say Jackson is more asexual that anything. Nevertheless, the point is we tend to label someone as a freak because we don’t understand his or her differences and we then believe almost any and every atrocious thing one could imagine about that person. For some reason, it seems the stranger a person is the more believable it is that some sort of perversion or depravity lies within that person. That is a sad chapter in the tradition of humanity.

People are more the same than different. We all have problems, we sometimes have similar interests, share ways of thinking, and have similar feelings. We are sharing the human experience. All the exteriors that make us different, whether it be ones we’ve chosen to showcase our individualism or ones of circumstance; they are all a prismatic reflection of what magic the human spirit is capable of.

Difference is a very deceptive illusion. I am not as different as I am comforted by using as an excuse for not being understood. I can be guarded and introverted. Henceforth, I often come across as arrogant. I need to lose my veneer of over-confidence and realize that everyone has issues, fears, and insecurities. The human experience is not about being an isolated, introspective fortress that holds strong, hiding its inner workings and exuding intimidation. It is more like being a stream; flowing over the rocks, under the sky, and through the woods; sharing, relating, and understanding.

My empathy for outcasts like Jackson has been reinforced. I have decided to be a more randomly kind person. Most importantly, I have discovered new challenges that are in store for the mysterious work in progress that is me.

The Evolution of Humans' Understanding of Animals

It is the opinion of most human beings that we are the superior life form on this planet. Somehow, this has justified a convoluted idea that everything else belongs to us. However, animals are not ours to eat. Yet we eat meat without any regard for the animal. I have watched undercover investigation videos on the internet from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). These videos were the catalyst for my becoming an Ovo-Lacto vegetarian. The videos depicted horribly unnecessary methods in which the factory farm workers torture animals before their death. I am not calling for Vegetarianism to be the law of the land. However, we must demand higher standards from the food and farm industries, not only for how animals are treated but also for our own health. These animals are giving up their lives for our lunch, dinner, and breakfast. At the very least, they are worthy of humane treatment until then.

When Americans think of farms, we typically think of serene crops and endless pastures. We imagine happy-go-lucky cows, chickens, and pigs all living harmoniously together like in Charlotte's Web. This may have been the case in simpler times but today the demand for meat has created factory farms. They operate much like a car factory. Imagine conveyor belts rolling down eggs and maybe even chicken legs. The cost to compete with the demand has led to animals being treated as just that, car parts. Except, this is life being manufactured into something else. Americans often admit that they don't want to know where their food came from or how it was made. We often avoid the horrible truths that are behind providing us with the meal we say a blessing for having. We thank a superior being and forget one we consider inferior. Animals have feelings; they do not deserve to suffer for our benefit. They have the right to live just as much as any other creature. Insensitivity to their basic rights leads to unnecessary cruelty.

Animals are not our property; they have rights. They have the right to pursue their own interests. Farm animals are treated much like plantation slaves of the 1800s. Just because animals cannot communicate to our comprehension does not mean that we are more intelligent or that our lives are more valuable. That would be speciesism, the assumption that one species is superior to another. In The Animal Liberation Movement, Peter Singer asks, "If possessing a higher degree of intelligence does not entitle one human being to use another for its own ends, how can it entitle human beings to exploit nonhuman beings?” Insensitivity to animals is simply cruel. Animals are worthy of kindness, mercy, and compassion.

Farm animals need freedom of movement and expression of normal behaviors. Most animals on factory farms have cages so compact they are unable to turn around or rest flat on the floor. The crowding of animals and their waste on factory farms creates such a strain on the animals' immune systems that normal body processes may be impaired (HSUS:Antibiotics). Hens, for example, are crowded three or four to a cage with a floor area less than the size of a single page of a newspaper. The cages have wire floors, since this reduces cleaning costs; though wire is unsuitable for the hens' feet; the floors slope, since this makes the eggs roll down for easy collection, although this makes it difficult for the hens to rest comfortably. These conditions hinder the birds' natural instincts: they cannot stretch their wings fully, walk freely, dust-bathe, scratch the ground or build a nest. Although they have never known other living conditions, observers have noticed that the birds sadly try to perform these natural actions. Frustrated at their inability to do so, hens often develop what farmers call "vices" and peck each other to death. To prevent this, the sensitive beaks of young birds are seared off with a hot blade (Singer).


Male cattle and pigs are castrated without any painkillers. Animals raised for food are bred and drugged to grow as large as possible as quickly as possible while many are so heavy that they become crippled under their own weight and die. Animals on factory farms rarely see the sun or breathe fresh air until they are prodded and crammed onto trucks for a nightmarish ride to the slaughterhouse, often through weather extremes and without food or water. Many die during transport, and others are too sick or weak to walk off the truck after they reach the slaughterhouse. The animals who survive this horrible ride are hung upside-down and their throats are slit, often while they're completely conscious. Many birds are still alive while they are suspended upside down, "skinned, hacked into pieces, or scalded in the defeathering tanks"(PETA). Pigs are comparable to dogs in intelligence and interests. However, if anyone kept a dog in the same way many pigs are kept, they would be liable to prosecution. It is because our interest in exploiting pigs is greater than our interest in exploiting dogs that we object to cruelty to dogs while funding the cruelty to pigs (Singer).

Animals are sentient creatures and do not deserve to suffer. It has been debated for ages whether animals have feelings or not. We wonder how much they understand, realize, and recognize. A common view is that animals are small-minded with few prospects in life limited to eating, excreting, sleeping, and mating. Animals are rarely thought of as being happy or sad. That is unless of course, it is one of our pets. Singer illustrates how the capacity for suffering is the vital characteristic that gives a being the right to equal consideration. The capacity for suffering and enjoying things is a pre-requisite for having interests at all. “It would be nonsense to say that it was not in the interests of a stone to be kicked along the road by a child. A stone does not have interests because it cannot suffer. Nothing that we can do to it could possibly make any difference to its welfare.” He states. A calf, on the other hand, does have an interest in not being tormented, because it will suffer if it is. "If a being suffers, there can be no moral justification for refusing to consider that suffering, no matter what the characteristics of the being are." We should also consider Singer's point that "a wild animal cannot distinguish an attempt to overpower and confine from an attempt to kill; one causes just as much terror as the other."

Animals can suffer from extreme loneliness, boredom, and frustration from being locked in chains or small cages (PETA). This may seem irrelevant considering the soon-to-be fate of most farm animals. However, more and more studies show that certain animals are able to recognize themselves. This and other cognitive behavior is the foundation of empathy. Empathy has been one of the vital characteristics used in distinguishing humans from other living beings. According to Eugene Linden's article How Much Do Animals Really Know?, scientists are discovering evidence of higher mental abilities in a wide range of animals. They have observed surprising traits that demonstrate empathy. Empathy is the ability to relate to another being, and it is the basis of morality. Empathy relies on self-awareness. Only an animal that recognizes itself can understand another’s circumstance. If it can be proven that an animal knows it is a separate creature from another, the case for animal empathy becomes very strong (Linden).

Unhealthy farm animals result in unhealthy food for human consumption. Antibiotics are frequently used to speed animal growth and prevent the incidence and spread of disease in unhygienic environments typical of American agriculture. This practice makes way for drug-resistant pathogens that can affect both humans and animals. Researchers have found that antibiotic-resistance genes can dwell in chicken meat and pork. “As the bacteria become more resistant to the antibiotics fed to farm animals raised for meat, they may become more resistant to the antibiotics needed to treat sick people,” says the researchers (HSUS:Antibiotics). Antibiotic-resistant strains can last longer in the body, possibly making one even sicker than before (Karras). Campylobacter is a pathogen, found in a chicken’s intestinal tract, that causes no harm to the animal, but it can make humans fatally ill. “Infections of campy are so common that many of us have probably already had it at least once,” says Robert Tauxe, M.D., deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Food borne, Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases in Atlanta. In addition, farmers often add arsenic, a known carcinogen, to chicken feed in order to fatten the flock (Karras).

Researchers have found a strain of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA, in workers and hogs at a hog farm that operates in Iowa and Illinois. Suggesting transmission can occur between pigs and humans. MRSA is a staph that's resistant to antibiotics. Handling contaminated meat could spread MRSA (Hadish). Considering the disgusting conditions in which these animals are kept, it's quite scary to ponder what else could be transmitted so easily from animals to humans. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has performed investigations that have documented that "downed" cattle, those too sick or disabled to stand or walk, are routinely beaten, dragged with chains, shocked with electric prods, and pushed by forklifts in efforts to move them at slaughter facilities. Except for the inability to rise, these nonambulatory animals appeared otherwise healthy. However, when researchers took bacterial cultures, they found cows infected with Salmonella and E. coli (HSUS:Downed Cattle). Because of the investigations, mistreatment and allegations of nonambulatory animals being slaughtered for human consumption prompted the largest beef recall in U.S. history. Some studies show that because nonambulatory animals spend more time lying down, they are more likely contaminated with fecal matter. Therefore, "downed" cattle may suffer from higher rates of food borne pathogens. All these findings have led to questioning the reliability of the USDA inspection process. Researchers have concluded, “Contaminated meat used to make ground beef would also contaminate subsequent clean meat exposed to common machinery and, thus, would increase the danger of contamination" (HSUS:Downed Cattle). “The USDA works feverishly to prevent a plant from shutting down; they go in and hold hands and grant extensions,” says Carol Tucker-Foreman, distinguished fellow of the Food Policy Institute for the Consumer Federation of America (Karras). A ban on the slaughter of downed animals would presumably cease the unnecessary torment of such animals while improving the safety of the food supply
(HSUS:Downed Cattle).

Americans have a blind trust in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. If more Americans were made aware of the inhumane treatment animals endure, there would undoubtedly be an economic backlash on farm factories. For now, most are in the dark about how their nourishment is nourished. We are much like the animals themselves, hidden in the dark with uncaring supervision. The very characteristics that we use to distinguish ourselves from the animals are void when it comes to our treatment of them. Are intelligence, empathy, and cognition characteristics that we only apply to our own kind? That would be speciesism, another form of discrimination. To consider animal rights is an absurd concept for most based on our many differences. However, difference is the basis of discrimination and discrimination is a corruption of morality. With so much at stake, animal welfare really is crucial to our own humanity.

The Civil War on Civil Rights: The Gay Marriage Battle


Many people feel the sanctity of marriage is threatened by the allowance of same-sex couples to legally marry. Our nation is engaging in a civil war over the definition of marriage. It seems that most heterosexual people think civil unions between same-sex couples would serve the purpose. However, the truth is that the mere word "marriage" encompasses so much more than present day civil unions do. Marriage and civil unions are quite different. Civil unions offer in many cases simply a ceremony while others offer a few benefits from the state in which they are performed. Meanwhile, marriage provides many state, federal, and health benefits along with global recognition. The legal right to marry is a civil right not just a heterosexual right.
Civil unions are like second-rate marriages for second-class citizens. There are an estimated 1,100 federal rights, benefits, tax breaks, protections, and privileges awarded to heterosexual couples instantly and simply with marital status. Civil unions legally unite same-sex couples sometimes granting a few legal benefits that vary in the few states that recognize them. In some instances, adoption is possible for same-sex couples who have had a civil union as it is for married couples. Some employers in states that recognize this union offer health and life insurance to the partner. One of the problems with this relatively new concept is that it can confuse those who may have to interpret it. Employers don't have to offer domestic partnership, as it is often called, benefits. For example, without the terminology in place employers can stick to the spouse and dependants only discounts for health insurance. In the instance of a health- related emergency, a hospital's staff does not have to acknowledge the domestic partner in regards to care for the patient. A family member can walk in and overturn crucial decisions made by the partner that were more than likely based on the patient's wishes. Same-sex couples can go to an attorney for substantial fees to set-up a few legal contracts between them such as wills and powers-of-attorney. However, those contracts can be overruled in court to a blood relative's favor. This, therefore, is discrimination.

A vote on civil rights is unconstitutional. In California, Proposition 8 was passed, legally banning gay marriage in the state. This came after a summer of love in which many same-sex couples were able to marry due to a California Supreme Court ruling. There was a very deceitful ad campaign by the Proposition 8 proponents implying that children's lives will somehow be ruined if gay marriage prevails and children are forced to be raised in a society that permits and teaches the acknowledgement and acceptance of same-sex couples. Proposition 8 is so ironic. Does it really seem constitutional to allow people to vote on the civil rights and liberties of a persecuted minority? Section 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment states as follows, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Reflecting on this, in an interracial marriage case, Loving vs. Virginia, the Supreme Court ruled on June 12, 1967,
"The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men. Marriage is one of the ‘basic civil rights of man,’ fundamental to our very existence and survival." The language used here is universal and spans the human race. The majority won in the case of Proposition 8. Are we really surprised? But on a national level, are there not more important things our voices should be heard for? How about we vote on war, bailouts, and other things that in some way affect us all instead of depriving a group of people something that no one else will lose. Does it make sense to vote on women's rights related to abortion?

Marriage means different things to different people. To many, marriage is a religious act, a union recognized by God. But, are all opposite-sex marriages truly recognized by God? In fact, marriage is so much more than just a religious, cultural, or a legal term. For gay couples, marriage is about social recognition and more importantly to be treated fairly by law. Included in the 1,100 federal rights, benefits, protections, and privileges married couples enjoy are Social Security benefits, veterans' benefits, health insurance, Medicaid, hospital visitation, estate taxes, retirement savings, pensions, family leave, and immigration law. Couples in a civil union cannot obtain many of these according to the way civil unions are presently defined.
Gays do not wish to "redefine marriage." Gay couples want to no longer be treated like second-class citizens who pay the same amount of taxes without having the breaks and protections that marriage provides. Civil unions mean separate and still not equal.

How I'm Trying To Be A Philanthropist

“The life of the individual only has meaning insofar as it aids in making the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful ”, said Albert Einstein. In trying to be a philanthropist, you must be empathetic and have a deep concern for humankind. It is by definition a person who works for the well-being of humankind, often through charitable aid or donations. It sounds like almost anyone could accomplish this. However, I believe one must take an active role in such a practice. One usually like me has been brought to a breaking point. My frustration with our economic and social repression has made me decide to be more conscious and more involved in such matters as the environment, politics, and social equality. These are the matters in which I have chosen for how I will try be a philanthropist.

"I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day", said E.B. White .When Hurricane Gustav came ashore, I looked the internet over for local food collections. I like most people have unopened, nonperishable food items that would better benefit someone else than the mice that would eventually feast. I couldn’t afford to send money and that was all the organizations seemed to want. A news story about a local puppy mill prompted me to gather the goods they requested like newspapers and old towels.


I try to get people involved in fundraisers and charitable events. However, time and money are not things people have much of to give away these days. I asked a friend of mine to join me in a walk that benefited those who suffer from heart disease. That was foolish. He doesn’t want to walk his dog in the evening so I don’t know why I thought he’d be excited about walking for a good cause at eight o’ clock in the morning.

“Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we can’t eat money”, says an ancient Cree proverb. I’ve always hated wasting things. I am trying to go green as much as I can. Recycling is very inconvenient for those of us living outside city limits and transporting the goods myself increases the size of my carbon footprint. I do hope going green is not just a trend. People always say to start at home. But, I always say start in your own neighborhood, as it is much easier to preach than to practice what you preach. However, this sort of confrontation can be difficult. Such philanthropy and a green attitude can offend some people. Green may go down for replacing red as the color of anger instead of being the color of envy.

“While we live, let us live”, said Lawrence. Human rights are fundamental to me. I recently joined and donated money to the Human Rights Campaign. This is an organization that promotes equality through education, encouraging positive images of minorities in the media, and frequently insisting fair treatment from our lawmakers. I have always been quite liberal and I think many changes in our country need to take place.

In what should seem like a liberating experience while trying to be a philanthropist and a better citizen of the planet, there are struggles. It is very difficult as an average citizen in today’s economy with limited funds, time, and resources to be pragmatic. I worry about alienating friends and family by persistently requesting donations and activism from them. I’m sure they all think I’m just a tree-hugging, green, millennial hippie. I also run the risk of remaining in a state of anger over the state of today’s world. I hope that you, me, and the rest of the world can make the necessary changes in our lives to try to be more caring, more aware, and more involved. Anyone who tries to accomplish this deserves to be called such a lofty title as philanthropist. “All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make our world”, so are the words of Buddha.
